As a holistic nutritionist, I cover more than just food. Nutrients come in many forms— from our relationships with others, what we consume visually, how we express our creativity, and how we treat ourselves. Holism includes spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. All of these aspects are equally important and encompass a healthy and fulfilling life.
However, the foods we eat are a cornerstone of how we ultimately feel. We know there are more microorganisms in our body than there are cells. This is called our microbiome, and it's an entire ecosystem living within us. They determine everything from our feel-good hormones to neurotransmitter production, inflammation, stress response, immune system function, and more. It’s critical that we feed them what they need to thrive, and that starts with real, whole foods. The Standard American Diet of ultra-processed foods contains chemicals and compounds that our body and microbiome do not recognize. A diet mainly consisting of processed foods deteriorates our microbiome, causing an imbalance of healthy bacteria. The consequences:
Feeling anxious, stressed, depressed, fatigued, cloudy-headed, etc. Physically, this looks like acne, under-eye bags, hair loss, excess body fat, poor muscle tone, etc.
Ultimately, holistic nutrition is about approaching your life from all aspects. This may sound like a huge undertaking, but it's really just about making small changes. Even minor adjustments in routine and diet can have profound effects on how you feel on a daily basis. These small changes compound and change your life long term. You'll show up more for yourself, so you can show up better for others. You'll live your life with more presence, peace, and joy.
